At MECU, We Keep Finding New Ways To Save You Money
posted: 02/20/2012
Nobody likes the idea of paying fees. At MECU, we do everything we can to make sure you pay as few fees as possible — and to keep each fee as low as possible. That’s precisely why, in the case of checking overdrafts, MECU processes checks in a way to minimize the cost to members.
This chart illustrates the difference between how MECU clears checks daily against your account (in order of the smallest to largest amount) versus how many banks approach their check processing.

As you can see by the chart, processing the smallest charges first can result in lower fees — because fewer items are processed against a negative balance. In the example shown here, a member would be charged only a $25 overdraft fee for one item, as opposed to $100 in overdraft fees if the largest transactions were debited first.
We’re also proud to report that MECU’s fees, including those for overdrafts, are lower than what banks typically charge their customers.
We believe operating in ways that benefit all our members is the fair and right thing to do. As always, we are committed to your success — and for us, that starts with saving you money every possible way, every single day.
